अर्थ शुनिऽ सनातन विस्मित हञा
स्तुति करे महाप्रभुर चरणे धरिया

On the occasion of Gaura Purnima, we celebrate the golden avatara, who kindly appeared in this world around five hundred years ago. His mission was to save the fallen souls in this dreaded age of Kali, which is distinct for its rampant quarrel and hypocrisy. We can identify the cheating spirit within the highest to the lowest, such that the honest feel lost in their quest to find a decent person, one who can guide them out of misery and despair. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is just the association we need, assisting in a multitude of ways.

Ask yourself a question. Be honest in the response. Apply care and attention in the assessment. Do you know anyone who is suffering? If so, are they isolated to a specific circumstance? Meaning, is it only the poor who you see struggling with life? Or is it also the wealthy? Is the misery exclusively reserved for the elderly, who are nearing the end, or can it be found in the youngest, who are passive and disinterested in the life experience?

If you realize that so many people are suffering, just what would you do to save them? Pretend that you have the means. Imagine that you have the time, that you can reach out with the solution. Just what would you offer them? A pep talk on passion? An impassioned plea to find their passion in life and go for it? Financial assistance? Some of them already have sufficient means. They waste the day away intoxicated, feeling hopeless and lost.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu arrived with a solution. The cure for the misery can be described in one word: Haribol. This is an enthusiastic recommendation to say the names of Hari, who is God. Hari has many names, in fact. We find a few of them in the maha-mantra: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. If we need assistance in implementing a routine for applying Haribol as an action-item, we can repeat the aforementioned mantra. We can follow in a systematic way, on a set of beads known as a japa mala. We can vow to recite the mantra on each bead, going around in a circle, to create what His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada describes as numerical strength.

बाल्य-भाव छले प्रभु करेन क्रन्दन
‘कृष्णऽ ‘हरिऽ नाम शुनिऽ रहये रोदन

bālya-bhāva chale prabhu karena krandana
‘kṛṣṇa’ ‘hari’ nāma śuni’ rahaye rodana

“In His childhood, when the Lord was crying, He would stop immediately upon hearing the holy names Krishna and Hari.” (Chaitanya Charitamrita, Adi 13.23)

If our enthusiasm, utsaha, continues to grow, the golden avatara is standing by to invest more responsibility. We can make a basic offering, in following the direct recommendation from Bhagavad-gita. If we are too busy travelling to and from work, in trying our best to maintain the home, then something simple like a flower or water will suffice. The key ingredient is devotion, and even if that is lacking we can try to build up to it through steadiness and determination.

पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं
यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति
तद् अहं भक्त्य्-उपहृतम्
अश्नामि प्रयतात्मनः

patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyaṁ
yo me bhaktyā prayacchati
tad ahaṁ bhakty-upahṛtam
aśnāmi prayatātmanaḥ

“If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-gita, 9.26)

Actions are sufficiently accounted for, but what about the intellect? Though known for His ebullience in chanting and dancing, often in the public space, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu cannot be limited with labels. It is not accurate to call Him a sentimentalist. Mahaprabhu can appeal to the highest intellectual curiosity by spontaneously breaking out into an explanation session. He can take a single verse from shastra, such as Shrimad Bhagavatam, and describe it in sixty-one different ways. The meanings are distinct and may appear to contradict one another. At the same time, the conclusion is always the same.

अहं वेद्मि शुको वेत्ति
व्यासो वेत्ति न वेत्ति वा
भक्त्या भागवतं ग्राह्यं
न बुद्ध्या न च टीकया

ahaṁ vedmi śuko vetti
vyāso vetti na vetti vā
bhaktyā bhāgavataṁ grāhyaṁ
na buddhyā na ca ṭīkayā

“[Lord Shiva said,] ‘I may know; Shukadeva Gosvami, the son of Vyasadeva, may know; and Vyasadeva may know or may not know the Shrimad Bhagavatam. On the whole, Shrimad-Bhagavatam, the spotless Purana, can be learned only through devotional service, not by material intelligence, speculative methods or imaginary commentaries.’” (Chaitanya Charitamrita, Madhya 24.313)

Does the solution thus far explained sound complicated? Is it too difficult to implement? The many esoteric truths, which explain the reality of this universe and the place of the living beings within it, can be understood through the grace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who is also known as Gaurahari. He is the life and soul of the brothers Rupa Gosvami and Sanatana Gosvami, who further expounded on the bhakti philosophy. It is the golden avatara who shines the light during this otherwise dark and dreadful period of time.

Sixty-one meanings profound,
Instruction to Sanatana found.

Inspiring also his brother,
Gaurahari like no other.

Of kindness and healing grace,
Of most beautiful face.

To relieve suffering of one and all,
As the golden avatara to call.
