Five Applications For A Persistence Layer

[Vishnu breathing]“It is said in the Vedic literature that innumerable universes issue forth when Maha-Vishnu exhales in His yoga-nidra, and innumerable universes enter His body when He again inhales. We have to imagine that these universes, which, according to our limited knowledge, are expanded unlimitedly, are so great that the gross ingredients, the five elements of the cosmic manifestation, namely earth, water, fire, air and sky, are not only within the universe, but are covering the universe in seven layers, each layer ten times bigger than the previous one.” (Krishna, The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vol 2, Ch 32)

1. General ledger

“Why are you short of funds? Haven’t you been collecting sufficiently? That one donor gave so much to the organization. Where has that money gone? If it has been eaten up already, we need to find out where it went.

“That is the meaning to accounting. You have to account for every expenditure. We might have several projects going on, and those can have a separate ledger, but proper accounting still has to take place. We cannot base our entire operation off of memory and what people say occurred. There has to be a record.”

2. Knowledge transfer

“Before continuing on, can you record this meeting? I will write down the key points, but I won’t be able to remember everything. If I can watch the meeting again later, that would help so much. This is a lot of information to take in. I don’t want to make any mistakes.”

3. Filing taxes

“They say that the best way to save on taxes is to incorporate. In simpler terms, start your own company. That way, everything that you do could be categorized as business activity. Businesses write off expenses. You only pay taxes on your profit.

[filing taxes]“The key here is to keep every receipt. Even if it might not be an expense, you never know. Have everything stored in one place, where it can later be sorted. Otherwise, if the tax authorities ever hit us with an audit, it will spell big trouble.”

4. An artist’s portfolio

“We are looking for someone who can design the customer facing aspects to our business. I see that you graduated from a prestigious college. That is very good. Do you have some samples of your work that we could look at?

“What do you mean you have nothing? You didn’t keep photographs or copies? They just were sold off and then you never saw them again? How can we conduct a proper evaluation? Artists are known to have portfolios. Where is yours?”

5. E-commerce website

“This website looks great in concept. The design is easy to understand for the average user. The proper currencies are displaying appropriate to the region of the end-user. We have the proper validations to make sure that forms do not get submitted with incomplete or improper data.

“What are we using for a back-end, though? There is a lot of data flowing through the website. It has to be persisted somewhere. We need to be able to conduct basic CRUD operations. Create, read, update, and delete. Let’s make sure that the database platform meets our needs, both in the immediate term and accounting for accelerated growth, as the popularity of the website increases.

We see from the situations described above that a persistence layer is almost a necessary requirement for society to function properly. Even if you have a few special individuals who can retain volumes of information within memory, the same will not be true of the people they deal with on a daily basis.

A single person cannot do everything. They have to share responsibility with others. The persistence layer has to do just that: persist. There is an entire discipline dedicated to preserving records. This is known as archiving.

The data has to be available. Without proper archiving, information will disappear. Then there is the issue of access. There could be resource contention. Many people want to access the same information, at the same time.

If there are updates made, they have to be done in a logically consistent manner. If one person is in the middle of updating a certain record, other workers need to be aware before continuing on. They should know that the data they see at a certain point in time might be changing very shortly. There is no perfect solution for these issues, and so technology is always evolving to handle collaboration.

The complexity is one way to further appreciate the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The material world itself is a place that persists. While it has a beginning, a middle, and an end in terms of display and manifestation, from Bhagavad-gita we learn that the energy is actually eternal.

“Ishvara (the Supreme Lord), jiva (the living entity), prakriti (nature), eternal time and karma (activity) are all explained in the Bhagavad-gita. Out of these five, the Lord, the living entities, material nature and time are eternal.” (Shrila Prabhupada, Bhagavad-gita, Introduction)

The eternal energy has to have a source. It has to have some way to be maintained. These are ways to understand God. He is the source of the material energy, which persists. He is the greatest maintainer. He is the support for both the material and spiritual energies. Because of this feature, Arjuna addresses God as Janardana in several places in Bhagavad-gita.

मनुष्याणां जनार्दन
नरके नियतं वासो
भवतीत्य् अनुशुश्रुम

manuṣyāṇāṁ janārdana
narake niyataṁ vāso
bhavatīty anuśuśruma

“O Krishna, maintainer of the people, I have heard by disciplic succession that those who destroy family traditions dwell always in hell.” (Arjuna, Bhagavad-gita, 1.43)

The Supreme Lord is able to keep track of everything. He is not overwhelmed in the process. He is within this universe and others. While observing everything, He is simultaneously in the spiritual world, being served by His closest associates.

[Vishnu breathing]This is beneficial for me and my pursuit of finding meaning to life. The cure to my troubles is liberation, which is release from the cycle of birth and death. The maintainer of people, Janardana, is able to keep track of my activities dedicated to Him. He will not forget a single deed done in His favor, even if I happen to move my thoughts elsewhere.

In Closing:

Upon memory power to insist,
But business requiring to persist.

That data flowing through,
Visitors of website to.

Consider entire universe so,
How single individual to know.

Vishnu while unlimitedly expanding,
Still full knowledge commanding.
